The meeting of water and land, and the ‘natural’ with the human-adapted environment, is a recurrent concern through Rhodes’s work. Likewise, she is preoccupied by the ways arteries and routes cross and connect with each other, or with other environmental elements, or have to divert or terminate. Unusual in this work is the haziness of the rendition of the distant trees or tundra. The term ‘aerial perspective’, often wrongly used of Rhodes’s work to mean elevated viewpoint, is applicable to the trees here, diffusion being used to create an effect of spatial recession. However, Rhodes tended to disfavour this ‘technique’, and in the present work she subverts it by in fact increasing definition again as the trees get further away.
